Introduction: About the Project
The Introduction page presents the project’s scope and objectives and offers a brief overview of the role of illustrations in literature. It also provides guidance on how to approach the collection, explaining its abbreviations and tools.
Overview
To explore the collection, please visit the Overview page, which provides several ways to navigate the catalog. These include a predetermined filtering by edition, character or chapter as well as an individually sortable catalog of all illustrations and a comparison tool.
Progress
At this point, only Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is part of this catalog. Between the publication of the original illustrated edition featuring more than 200 drawings by H. E. Kemble in 1885 and the end of World War II, seven different sets of illustrations accompanied German-language editions of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These illustrations, together with Kemble’s original drawings, are available on this website.
In the future, illustrated translations of additional works by Twain such as Adventures of Tom Sawyer or Life on the Mississippi will be added to the collection.
